The good pub guide review

This former coaching inn is simply but elegantly furnished, with little decorative touches such as church candles on shelves or in lanterns, antlers, prints and fresh flowers adding appeal and interest. Several knocked-through bar rooms work their way around a big servery (where there are high chairs and stools against the counter), with grey-painted half-panelling, armchairs by a log fire in a stone fireplace, settles and window seats with scatter cushions, bare boards here and flagstones and rugs there, and a mix of farmhouse chairs and benches around wooden tables of all shapes and sizes. There's also a restaurant with another open fire. Drinks include a changing selection of ales on handpump, such as Bath Ales Gem, Flying Monk Elmers, Otter Amber and Ringwood Boondoggle, nearly 20 wines by the glass and nine gins; darts. There are plenty of seats and picnic-sets in the pleasant back garden. The six dog-friendly bedrooms are individually furnished and comfortable and they also have self-catering cottages in a converted barn and stable block. The pub is handy for Westonbirt Arboretum. Disabled access.

The good pub guide food review

Enjoyable food (with wood-fired pizzas in summer) includes truffle mac 'n' cheese fritters, crispy bacon, gem and avocado salad, seared bream fillet with Cornish new potato niçoise, roast cauliflower with Persian-spiced lentils, spinach and chickpeas, Moving Mountain vegan burger with vegan cheddar, guacamole and fries, chicken, tarragon and leek pie with mash and green, and puddings such as rhubarb and custard crumble pie and eton mess pavlova.
