The good pub guide review
Things might be quieter on the A5074 than they were in the 1850s when this substantial coaching inn was built, but there's plenty of foot traffic on the surrounding paths in this pretty valley a couple of miles east of Windermere. The chatty beamed and flagstoned bar has church pews, a lovely tall settle and mate's chairs around a mix of tables, while the candlelit dining room has a medley of painted and antique chairs and tables. The fine choice of drinks include Handsome Hound and Blonde and a guest beer on handpump plus several wines by the glass, quite a few malt whiskies and an extraordinary list of 180 gins from all over the world with over a dozen different tonics to mix with them; background music, board games and TV. Staff are attentive and keen to please. The gents' is upstairs. There are seats outside among flowering tubs, with more on a raised terrace. Bedrooms are thoughtfully furnished and four in the annexe have their own outside seating areas.
