The good pub guide review

The large main bar in this much extended, characterful pub is the focus of its many charms. There's an assortment of dining chairs around wooden tables on parquet flooring or large rugs, some high tables with equally high stools in one corner, and masses of photos and pictures on pigeon-grey walls. House plants and bookshelves and a long counter stretches along a back wall. Here, friendly staff serve St Austell Brunning & Price Traditional Bitter plus Harveys Sussex Best, Surrey Hills Shere Drop, Timothy Taylors Landlord, Wantsum Montgomery and Westerham Hay Today on handpump, 24 wines by the glass, more than 120 gins and 80 whiskies. A quarry-tiled walkway leads towards the original building with a couple of small rooms leading off to each side with similar furnishings and décor; there's also a massive circular table surrounded by a dozen chairs plus a private dining room. Outside, a large paved area with raised flower beds has good quality tables and chairs under big parasols and there are picnic-sets on . Dogs are warmly welcomed with a bowl of water and maybe even a biscuit or two.

The good pub guide food review

Interesting food from a regularly changing menu includes sandwiches and 'light bites', red pepper hummus with flatbread, chicken liver pâté, crispy vegetable parcels with spiced mango dip, roast duck breast with crispy croquettes, celeriac purée and cherry jus, Malaysian chicken curry with coconut rice and pak choi, braised feather of beef bourguignon with horseradish mash and kale, steak burger with coleslaw and chips, and puddings such as crème brûlée and chocolate and orange tart with passion-fruit sorbet.
