The good pub guide review

Halfway between Bridgnorth and Ludlow and within striking distance of some lovely walks, including Brown Clee Hill (Shropshire's highest), this charming inn is a fine spot to spend some time. It has three comfortable, simply furnished bedrooms, and breakfasts are first class. Rescued from dereliction some years ago, it's now a proper village pub, owned and run by the community, but with a warm welcome for visitors too and restaurant-standard food. The cosy front bar has leather sofas and armchairs by a woodburning stove, rugs on tiles and stools by the counter where friendly, helpful staff serve four real ales on handpump from the likes of Enville, Hop & Stagger, Hobsons, Ludlow, Salopian and Wye Valley, 14 wines by the glass, several gins and farm cider; background music, board games. The dining room is in an airy, oak-framed extension at the back with a homely arrangement of cushioned chairs and wooden tables on bare boards. There are seats on a terrace with large parasols and heaters, picnic-sets on grass and under trees in the orchard and a children's play area; boules. Disabled access.

The good pub guide food review

The highly praised food includes crispy short rib fritters with smoked paprika mayonnaise, whitebait with tartare sauce, wild mushroom, garlic, pea and herb tagliatelle, pork and black pudding wellington with creamed cabbage and black garlic aioli, beer-battered haddock with mushy peas and chips, gnocchi with kale and hazelnut pesto and cherry tomatoes, pork fillet with crispy garlic sausage, savoy cabbage and a fried egg, breaded Cornish cod katsu curry with pak choi, 8oz local sirloin steak with confit tomato, grilled mushroom and skin-on chips, and puddings such as damson bavarois with spiced damson jam and whisky chantilly and sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice-cream. The Sunday roasts are very popular.
