The good pub guide review

Where to start with this highly praised 18th-c pub' Perhaps with the beers, where a seriously enviable list has been built up: Grey Trees Afghan Pale, North Riding Citra Pale, Oakham Citra, Salopian Dewdrops and Kashmir and Tenby Harbwr Pia Whanga on handpump, to name some of those regularly on offer. Also, five local craft keg beers, a couple of ciders and perries, 30 wines by the glass and over 20 small-batch gins, all served by knowledgable, friendly staff. The cosy bar has an informal, relaxed atmosphere, comfortable leather sofas, wooden chairs and tables, a roaring log fire, newspapers to read and background music. There's also a restaurant with elegant high-backed wooden dining chairs around a mix of tables and black and white local photo-prints taken by the landlord (an ex-professional photographer). A suntrap decked area has seats and tables. A new shop sells a good range of food, drink and household goods including fruit and veg boxes and their own-made bread. Disabled access.

The good pub guide food review

The imaginative modern food is extremely good and very fairly priced. Dishes include sandwiches, pan-fried cockles, leeks, laverbread and pancetta on sourdough, smoked celeriac burger with sriracha and charcoal mayo, red cabbage slaw and chips, beer-braised short rib with roasted garlic and chive mash and lemon and ginger dressing, beetroot, mushroom, black bean and spinach pie, pan-fried hake with noodles, miso mushrooms and puy lentils, and puddings such as chocolate and avocado cake with plum compote and salted caramel and home-made ice-creams.
