The good pub guide review

This walkers' favourite gets packed out at peak times, but the friendly, efficient staff still find time to make you feel welcome, and there are plenty of tables outside, not to mention a village green for the congenial crowds to spill out on to. It's an unpretentious and rather special place set in spectacular scenery, with walks of every gradient from the front door. The small front bar has beams and a couple of window seats that look across to Elterwater through the trees, while the small back bar is traditionally furnished: thick slate walls, winter coal fires, oak benches, settles, windsor chairs and a big old rocking chair. There are two beers named for the pub ' Britannia Blonde (from sister company Langdale Brewing) and Britannia Inn Special from Coniston ' plus regulars Coniston Bluebird, Elterwater Gold and Jennings Neddy Boggle and another three Cumbrian guests on handpump; a dozen or so malt whiskies. The traditional lounge is comfortable, and there's also a hall and dining room. You'll find plenty of seats outside, and visiting dancers (morris and step and garland) perform in summer. Bedrooms are warm and simple, and come with local health club privileges.

The good pub guide food review

Reliably good food includes sandwiches and rolls, potted crayfish tails in mace and chive butter, grilled haggis, minted braised lamb marinated in mint and honey, five-bean chilli, Bluebird-battered haddock and chips, plus puddings such as sticky toffee pudding and crème brûlée.
