The good pub guide review

This fine 16th-c village pub is ideal for walks along the Cotswold Way and on Selsley Common. The three interconnected bar rooms have beams, a woodburning stove and an open fire, wood-strip floors and modern dining chairs and tables in polished wood, with high chairs at the blue-painted bar counter. There's Stroud Budding, Wickwar BOB and a beer named for the pub on handpump, several wines by the glass including champagne, 18 malt whiskies and 100 gins ' they have gin tasting trays, regular gin evenings and even offer overnight gin experiences. Service is friendly and helpful; the pub dog is called Bacchus. The garden room dining extension has retractable glass doors leading out to the terrace where picnic-sets enjoy spreading valley views. If you want to stay overnight, there are two comfortable modern bedrooms.

The good pub guide food review

The landlord cooks the accomplished, well presented food, which includes lunchtime sandwiches, smoked mackerel pâté, glazed leek, gruyère and tarragon fregola with crispy shallots, sesame chicken salad with beansprouts, Dorset crab tagliatelle, free-range chicken with celeriac, potato and mustard croquette, charred leeks and tarragon jus, seven-hour blade of beef with celeriac, parlsey and potato purée, salmon and smoked haddock fishcake with broad beans, barbary duck breast with braised red cabbage and mustard mash, and puddings such as rose-scented crème brûlée with pistachio ice-cream and peanut butter parfait with caramalised bananas, banana bread and toffee.
