The good pub guide review
One of Cumbria's most charming addresses ' Strawberry Bank ' is home to one of its most appealing pubs. Prettily perched inside a hairpin bend a couple of miles east of Windermere, it has a heated and covered terrace with rustic furniture that offers stunning views of the Winster Valley. Inside, it's a warren of characterful little rooms. The main bar has low black beams in a bowed ceiling, and country chairs and plain wooden tables on polished flagstones. A small lounge has oak tables and settles to match its fine Jacobean panelling. There's also a plain little room beyond the serving counter with pictures and a fire in an open range and an upstairs dining room; background music and board games. There are Robinsons ales such as Cumbria Way and Dizzy Blonde plus local guests from the likes of Bowness Bay and Hawkshead, a good range of bottled beers both British and foreign, 14 wines by the glass, 18 gins and farm cider; service is friendly and helpful. They offer stylish and comfortable self-catering suites, cottages and apartments, some with their own terrace. Good walks all around; climb nearby Gummer's How for a quick route to great views.
The good pub guide food review
The popular food includes hand-raised warm pork pie, smoked mackerel pâté with beetroot and horseradish chutney, Cartmel Valley smoked salmon with horseradish and lemon goats cheese mousse, Cumbrian beef burger, prosciutto-wrapped chicken stuffed with goats cheese, fish and chips, crispy potato gnocchi with roasted vegetables and feta cheese, and puddings such as sticky toffee pudding and chocolate pot.
