The good pub guide review

It's the lashings of style, attention to detail, impeccable service, great choice of drinks and first rate food that ensures the on-going popularity of this lively bar-brasserie attached to the very smart Calcot hotel and spa. The stylish and thoughtfully divided layout gives you the feeling of having a snug area more or less to yourself, without losing the friendly atmosphere of plenty going on around you. There are flagstones, elegant wooden dining chairs and tables, well chosen pictures and drawings and wooden 'stag's head and antlers' on mushroom-coloured walls, leather tub armchairs and stools and a neat row of copper cooking pans above the blazing log fire. From the long counter lined with modern chairs, they serve Butcombe Bitter and Wickwar BOB on handpump, around two dozen interesting wines by the glass and several malt whiskies; background music. The slightly sunken front courtyard has a few picnic-sets. The hotel's rooms and suites range from cosy to ultra-luxurious with families well catered for. Westonbirt Arboretum is not far away.

Exceptional food includes beetroot and burrata salad with orange, hazelnut and watercress, twice-baked cheddar cheese soufflé, smoked salmon with celeriac and horseradish remoulade, pork and sage sausages with mash, crispy shallots and onion gravy, sweet potato and bean curry with onion bhaji, pak choi and spring onion, lamb shank shepherd's pie, gilt-head bream with crushed new potatoes and masala velouté, papparedelle with roasted pepper, courgette and romesco sauce, and puddings such as raspberry bakewell tart and bread and butter pudding with toffee sauce and vanilla ice-cream.
