The good pub guide review

Leaflets at this little country gem detail a four-mile circular walk on the South Downs ' ideal for walking off one of the noteworthy ploughman's lunches that are its stock in trade. The Harrow remains as unspoilt as ever. There's no pandering to modern methods: no credit cards, no waitress service, no restaurant, no music and the rose-covered loos are outside. The same family have run it for almost 90 years and everything revolves around village chat. Adverts for logs sit next to calendars of local views (on sale in support of local charities) and news of various quirky competitions. The small public bar has hops and dried flowers (replaced every year) hanging from the beams, built-in wall benches on the tiled floor, stripped-pine wallboards, a good log fire in the big inglenook and wild flowers on scrubbed deal tables; dominoes. Bowman Swift One, Dark Star Hophead, Flack Manor Double Drop, Hop Back GFB, Langham Hip Hop and Ringwood Best are tapped straight from casks behind the counter, and they have local wine and apple juice; staff are polite and friendly, even when under pressure. The big garden has seats on paved areas surrounded by cottage garden flowers and fruit trees. The Petersfield bypass doesn't intrude much on this idyll, though you'll need to follow the directions above to find the pub. They sell honesty-box flowers outside to support local nursing charities. Wheelchair access but no disabled loos.
