The good pub guide review
This cottagey, low-beamed inn is perfectly placed for a Hampshire Downs walk. The appealing bar has standing timbers, flagstones, log fires and candlelight, while the five comfortable, country-style bedrooms are perfect for hikers taking on the Pilgrims Way. Elsewhere, there are stripped wood floors, sofas and armchairs dotted here and there and a mix of attractive tables and dining chairs. Throughout are all sorts of interesting knick-knacks, books, copper items, horsebrasses and lots of pictures and prints on contemporary paintwork. High bar chairs line the counter where they keep Ringwood Fortyniner and Triple fff Altons Pride on handpump, 18 wines by the glass (including fizz) and a growing gin collection; background music and board games. Chawton Cottage (Jane Austen's house) is a ten-minute drive away.
