The good pub guide review

This pretty Chilterns pub has been cared for by the same husband-and-wife team (chef and front of house, respectively) for 25 years. The public bar, with a winter log fire in the brick fireplace, is very much at the heart of the place. There are lots of little framed prints, a cushioned sofa and leather-seated bar stools around a low circular table on the wooden floor, and high bar chairs by the counter; background music. You'll find Rebellion IPA and two changing guest beers on handpump, 13 wines by the glass (including champagne) and a good choice of malt whiskies; service is friendly and attentive. The two dining rooms are quite different in style ' one is light and airy with country kitchen tables and chairs, while the other is more formal with dark red walls, smarter dining chairs and tables and candlelight. Outside, a side gate leads to a lovely garden with a large tree in the middle and unusual five-sided tables that are well placed for attractive valley views. It's an enjoyable place to stay, with three comfortable bedrooms. There are plenty of nearby walks in the charming Chilterns countryside; the delightful Cobstone windmill is just down the road and it's only a few miles to Henley and the River Thames.

The good pub guide food review

Rewarding food includes lunchtime baguettes, sharing boards, eggs benedict with parma ham, king prawns in tempura batter with chilli jam and sweet chilli noodles, baked stuffed squash with goats cheese, chicken breast with asparagus and mushroom risotto and rosemary sauce, smoked haddock on colcannon with a poached egg and grain mustard sauce, duck breast with pak choi, rösti potato and orange and Cointreau sauce, and puddings.
