The good pub guide review

The only pub in the beautiful Little Langdale Valley, the slate-fronted Three Shires attracts crowds of appreciative walkers and cyclists, along with lovers of beer, whisky and sweeping views. It's ringed by fells, and you can see up to the nearby Wrynose Pass, where the historical counties of Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire meet (hence the pub's name). Our readers continue to praise the genuine welcome and reliably high standards here. Most head straight for the slate-floored bar, with its stripped timbers, green Lakeland stone, William Morris wallpaper, antique oak carved settles, country kitchen chairs and Cumbrian photographs. Five real ales on handpump might include Barngates Goodhews Dry Stout, Bowness Bay Swan Blonde, Coniston Old Man Ale, Cumbrian Legendary Loweswater Gold and Hawkshead Bitter, and they also have over 50 malt whiskies,a decent wine list and draught cider. The front restaurant has comfortable leather dining chairs and a wood floor, and a snug leading off; the residents' lounge has sofas and an open fire. Background music, TV and board games. There is plentiful outdoor seating in the garden and on the verandahs and terrace, offering stunning views to the fells above and partly wooded hills. The nine pretty bedrooms have a fine outlook too. Disabled access to public rooms (not to bedrooms).

The good pub guide food review

Locally sourced food comes from seasonal menus and along with sandwiches might include ploughman's, twice-baked lancashire cheese soufflé, pulled ham, pea and rosemary croquette with roasted garlic and saffron aioli, beer-battered haddock and chips, sweet potato, chickpea and spinach curry, sweet chilli and ginger vegetable stiry-fry, pan-fried pheasant breast, and puddings such as sticky toffee pudding with fudge sauce and gingerbread vodka and toffee ripple ice-cream and apple and backberry crumble.
