The good pub guide review

The Bells is picture-postcard pretty, a white-painted building with wisteria coiling around its front door in a charming spot on a quiet cobbled lane. The various rooms have beams, panelling and open fires that contrast cleverly with contemporary seating ranging from brown leather wall banquettes with scatter cushions to high-backed upholstered or leather dining chairs around an assortment of tables on bare boards; plenty of prints, paintings and mirrors on the walls. Robinsons Cumbria Way, Dizzy Blonde and Unicorn on handpump and several wines by the glass served by helpful, friendly staff; background music. In warm weather, head for the seats on a front terrace overlooking the black and white 14th-c church; there's also rattan-style furniture under a pergola on a side decked area and a spacious lawn with picnic-sets spreading down through trees all the way to a little stream. Major sporting events are sometimes shown out here on a big screen.

The good pub guide food review

Food is creative and attractively presented, and includes a noteworthy vegan selection for every course; there's a new wood-fired pizza oven too. The menu includes some international classics such as nasi goreng, Thai green curry and Cajun halloumi stack, along with steaks, burgers, pies and fish served battered, pan-fried and with a chickpea tagine. For dessert, try a vegan dark chocolate torte with aquafaba meringue and raspberry sorbet, apple and berry crumble or sticky toffee pudding.
