The good pub guide review

The owners of this attractive stone pub deep in the North Tyne Valley are extremely conscientious about the environment and gently weave their beliefs into every aspect of the business; they grow their own produce (and recycle food waste in a wormery), have a charging point in the car park for electric cars and use a biomass boiler. The nicely restored, low-beamed, carpeted bar has a woodburning stove with a traditional oak surround, comfortable, tartan-upholstered seats and easy chairs and some high chairs around an equally high table. You'll find a good range of drinks: 12 wines by the glass, 25 malt whiskies, 35 gins and a farm cider, plus Fyne Jarl and Hadrian Border Secret Kingdom with a couple of guests such as Hadrian Border Tyneside Blonde and Wylam Gold Tankard on handpump. Service is excellent; background music and TV. There's also a restaurant, a spacious conservatory and tables on the terrace and a Dark Skies observatory nearby. There are 22 comfortable bedrooms; some of the ground-floor ones have disabled access.

The good pub guide food review

Highly regarded food making good use of their own produce and on-site smokery includes sandwiches, tempura courgette flowers with goats cheese, chilli and honey, own-made charcuterie, pan-fried duck breast with charred cauliflower, black pudding 'prunes', savoury granola and cassis jelly, beer-battered haddock, roast vegetable jalfrezi, grilled salmon with king prawns, Moroccan-style hogget with spiced couscous and home-made harissa, and puddings such as blackcurrant cheesecake and chocolate brownie with chocolate sauce. There are also tasting menus including for vegetarians.
