The good pub guide review

There's a distinctly piscatorial vibe to this handsome country inn surrounded by rolling, lush countryside and just a few steps from the trout-filled River Test. Stuffed fish and hunting and fishing paintings hang on the walls. The walking (as well as the fly fishing) is fantastic round here, and the windows in the bar and dining room provide glorious views of the Test Way walking route. The pub has an interesting mix of dining chairs around miscellaneous tables on bare boards and candlelight. Crafty Blind Side and Hop Tipple on handpump, 12 wines by the glass, around 20 gins and 28 malt whiskies; background music, TV and board games. Seating on the terrace or in the garden ranges from modern rattan-style through traditional wooden chairs and tables to a sunken area with wall seats around a fire pit. Bedrooms are comfortable and well equipped, and dogs are allowed.

The good pub guide food review

As well as breakfast and lunchtime sandwiches, the popular food includes fried buffalo chicken wings, panko-breaded squid with pico de gallo, ale-battered haddock with chips, a pie of the day and a fish of the day, gnocchi with triple cheese sauce, burger (short rib, chicken or vegan) and chips, caesar salad with chicken, steaks with a choice of classic sauce, and puddings such as chocolate tart, crumble of the day and lemon and forest fruits eton mess.
