The good pub guide review

In the grounds of this appealingly unchanged country pub is the Hexhamshire Brewery ' both are owned by the same family. The brewery's output, including Blackhall English Stout, Devils Elbow, Shire Bitter, Wall Walker and Whapweasel, makes its way to six of the pub's handpumps, supplemented by two draught ciders (Weston's Old Rosie and a guest), 20 malt whiskies and a dozen wines by the glass. It's a quaint little place whose neatly kept snug bar has genuine character, dark ply panelling, low ceilings, red furnishings, a dark red carpet and two welcoming open fires. The sunken garden is peaceful and pretty, with attractive planting and seats on grass by a restored mill stream. Hexham Racecourse is not far away and there are also woodland walks nearby.

The good pub guide food review

The appealing, good value food changes daily and, as well as sandwiches, might include soup of the day, dressed crab, haddock with tomato and basil, mince and dumplings, steak pie, bacon chop in cider sauce, tomato, bean and vegetable casserole, and puddings such as syrup sponge and a cake of the day; Saturday is Indian food night.
