The good pub guide review
This is a delightful pub housed in a converted barn of disputed vintage, though it certainly looks pleasingly like an old banqueting hall. Renowned for its warm welcome, monthly dog walks and excellent array of drinks, it's a lovely community hub. The L-shaped, mainly open-plan rooms are spacious, with exposed stone walls, stalling and standing timbers creating separate seating areas, strikingly heavy beams and a couple of big log fires in fine stone fireplaces. A two-tiered and balconied part at one end has a wall covered with huge brass platters; elsewhere there are nice old photographs and a variety of paintings. Dining chairs and dark wooden tables are grouped on wooden, quarry-tiled or carpeted floors, and there are bookshelves, big pot plants, stone bottles on windowsills and fresh flowers. High wooden bar stools line the long counter where they serve St Austell Brunning & Price Traditional Bitter, Hogs Back TEA and four local guests on handpump, a dozen wines by the glass, and more than 60 gins. The courtyard (adjacent to the characterful pigeonry) has teak tables and chairs. Wheelchair facilities and disabled parking. Perfectly placed for country walks, with or without dogs.

Enjoyable food includes sandwiches and 'light bites' (such as cheddar, leek and balsamic onion quiche), plus chicken caesar croquettes, baked camembert with apple, celery and walnut salad, grilled sea bass fillets with potato and shallot terrine, braised feather of boeuf bourguignon with horseradish mash and kale, beer-battered cod and chips, roast duck breast with crispy leg croquettes, celeriac purée and cherry jus, and puddings such as chocolate and orange tart and summer pudding with clotted cream.
