The good pub guide review

This attractive red-brick pub ' a former almshouse dating back to the 16th c ' has a gently civilised but easy-going and convivial atmosphere. Several low-ceilinged, interlinked rooms have heavy beams, slate floors and open fires and are decorated in a stylish, simple way that's immediately inviting. There are church chairs around polished tables in the bar, comfortable seating in the dining areas, contemporary paintwork or exposed brick walls and elegant flower arrangements; background music. You'll find Windsor & Eton Guardsman and guests such as Tillingbourne Falls Gold on handpump, 20 excellent wines by the glass, six gins (some local), six whiskies and cocktails. A sunny back courtyard with decking has cushioned wicker chairs and sofas.

The good pub guide food review

The imaginative, monthly changing menu includes smoked haddock arancini with curried mayo, chalkstream trout with cucumber ketchup and lemongrass sauce, wood pigeon with roast beetroot and black pudding purée, beef tartare with confit egg yolk, halibut with hasselback potatoes, runner beans and tomato and chervil dressing, dill gnocchi with courgettes and girolle mushrooms, roast lamb rump with hispi cabbage, pea and pancetta casserole, and puddings such as blackberry soufflé with white chocolate and cardamom ice-cream and tonka bean brûlée with raspberry sorbet; they offer a weekday set lunch.
