The good pub guide review

This spacious former coaching inn has existed on this site for centuries. With plenty of space for both eating and drinking, the main bar is a long room with painted beams, high chairs at the counter and at elbow tables and a fire at one end; a second bar has sofas, more painted beams and a comfortable feel. There are three changing ales on handpump ' perhaps Fullers London Pride, Marstons Pedigree and Sharps Doom Bar ' 12 wines by the glass and 50 gins, served by friendly staff. The restaurant is a lovely room with a high pitched roof and oak beams, farmhouse and other chairs around solid tables on wooden boards and a woodburning stove in a sizeable fireplace; a smaller room is more intimate and similarly furnished; background music. In warm weather, take advantage of the cushioned, rattan-style sofas on the terrace, the wooden tables and chairs under parasols on gravel or the picnic-sets on the long lawn (where there's also a wooden climbing frame); summer barbecues.

The good pub guide food review

Good food uses local, seasonal produce and includes sandwiches, deep-fried whitebait with curry mayo, grilled goats cheese with beetroot, candied walnuts and red onion jam, chicken pie with creamed potatoes and sautéed greens, pan-fried fillet of salmon with cheese and leek gnocchi and samphire, and puddings such as sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice-cream and lemon posset with red fruit compote and ginger nut biscuit; Thursday is burger and pint night and there's brunch on Saturday (10.30am-2pm).
