The good pub guide review
One of the many popular hostelries in the New Forest, where peak tourist season brings a thirsty influx of walkers and riders. There's a cosy area with a woodburning stove in a nice old brick fireplace, rugs and comfortable leather armchairs; background music and board games. Various dining rooms lead off with more rugs on carpet or tiles, all manner of cushioned dining chairs and wooden tables, frame-to-frame country pictures and photographs on pale walls above painted wooden dados, house plants on windowsills, mirrors and elegant metal chandeliers. The bar has an open fire, stools and tables on parquet flooring and from the long curved counter, St Austell Brunning & Price Traditional Bitter, Flack Manor Double Drop and Hedge Hop, Hop Back Crop Circle and Minstrel and Itchen Valley Watercress Best on handpump, farm ciders, 20 good wines by the glass (including fizz), more than 60 gins and cocktails; staff are helpful and friendly. The spacious grounds, much extended, include a back terrace and garden with plenty of chairs and tables, and a children's play area with a jolly green vintage tractor, swings and a climbing frame.
The good pub guide food review
Good bistro-style food includes sandwiches and 'light bites', courgette and red onion bhaji, beetroot hummus, beef bao bun, fish pie, chicken, ham and leek pie with mash and spring greens, wild mushroom risotto, beer-battered cod and chips, sweet potato and spinach Malaysian curry, crispy beef salad, and puddings such as dark chocolate and orange tart and bread and butter pudding with apricot sauce.
