The good pub guide review

This country pub was built on the site of an old coaching inn and is a clever mix of ancient and modern. There are red-painted walls between beams and timbering, broad floorboards and weathered quarry tiles, and warm winter fires. Also, leather sofas and tub chairs, high-backed purple and red or ladder-back dining chairs around all sorts of tables, plenty of mirrors giving the impression of even more space, brass plates and mugs, candles and fresh flowers. Green Duck Blonde, Sharps Doom Bar and Wye Valley HPA on handpump and 14 wines by the glass. One elegant but cosy room, known as the Players Lounge, has photographs of the landlord Mr Narbett, who was once a chef for the England football team. The pretty garden has three 'beach huts' to hire (with their own menu), chairs with barrel tables and sofas as well as heaters and parasols. Disabled access. We always get plenty of enthusiastic reports from our readers about this well run, popular pub.

The good pub guide food review

As well as weekend breakfasts (9-11am), the rewarding food includes sandwiches, crispy butternut squash and goats cheese arancini, rosemary and garlic box-baked camembert with red onion confit, Balinese chicken curry, pie of the day, ham and free-range eggs, stone-baked pizzas, panko-crumbed katsu chicken burger with sweet potato fries, beer-battered cod and chips, chargrilled fillet steak with oven-dried tomatoes and chips, and puddings such as espresso affogato with vanilla ice-cream and raspberry and limoncello crème brûlée with lemon curd eton mess.
