The good pub guide review

A large modern fire pit inside and sunny garden with deckchairs outside provide a warm welcome at this beautifully restored golden-stone inn, whatever the season. Built in 1770 to take advantage of what was a busy turnpike road, it's now part of the Brunning & Price group. The beamed interconnected bar and dining areas have a lot of character, with cushioned Edwardian-style chairs and leather armchairs grouped around a wide mix of tables on rugs and pale floorboards. Prints and photos cover pale-painted walls, there are books on shelves, mirrors over several open fires, and elegant metal chandeliers, house plants and stone bottles. Friendly young staff serve St Austell Brunning & Price Traditional Bitter and several guests such as Hook Norton Hooky and North Cotswold Green Man IPA on handpump, real cider, 20 wines by the glass, more than 100 gins and numerous malt whiskies; background music and board games. The large garden has good quality seats and tables under a gazebo.

The good pub guide food review

With vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, the good brasserie-style food includes sandwiches and 'light bites', chicken liver parfait with carrot chutney, crispy vegetable parcels with spiced mango dip, smoked haddock and salmon fishcake with tomato and spring onion salad, warm crispy beef salad with sweet chilli sauce, lotus root and roasted cashews, chicken, ham and leek pie with tarragon sauce, 10oz rump steak with dijon and tarragon butter and chips, and puddings such as triple chocolate brownie with chocolate sauce and hot waffle with toffee sauce, caramelised banana and honeycomb ice-cream.
