The good pub guide review
Once a pair of 16th-c cottages, this old pub has postcard-perfect thatch, a charming country garden and plenty of handsome old features including beams, timbers and flagstones. There are homely dining chairs, stools and benches around a mix of old pubby tables in the cosy bar, Butcombe Gold, Sharps Doom Bar and a changing local ale such as Flack Manor Double Drop on handpump, eight wines by the glass and Black Rat cider; background music and board games. The restaurant has a log fire in each of its two rooms (one in a big brick inglenook), old engravings and cricket prints and an informal and relaxed atmosphere; background music and board games. Benches and tables are arranged beneath lovely hanging baskets at the front of the building, with picnic-sets under parasols on grass; good nearby walks. This is a pretty village on the edge of the New Forest and Rockbourne Roman Villa is nearby.
The good pub guide food review
Well regarded food includes lunchtime sandwiches, breaded whitebait, tempura-battered vegetables, fishcake with salad and chilli jam, curried chicken with watercress and aioli, courgette and sweetcorn fritters with poached egg, a fish of the day with potato rösti and spinach, root vegetable cobbler with cheese scone, steak and kidney suet pudding, and desserts such as vodka-infused watermelon with strawberry compote and sorbet and blackberry, lemon and elderflower eton mess.
