The good pub guide review

The Old Castle pub is a short walk from the old castle itself: all that's left is a 20-metre high remnant of the Norman tower, leaning at such an extraordinary angle that you expect it to topple at any moment. Walk through the gardens for marvellous views over the Low Town and the River Severn far below. There are fine views from the far end of the pub's sunny back terrace too - a pretty spot with picnic-sets, colourful hanging baskets, big pots of flowers and shrub borders. Inside, there's a low-beamed open-plan bar of proper character with tiles and bare boards, cushioned wall banquettes and settles around cast-iron-framed tables, and bar stools arranged along the counter where the friendly landlord and his helpful staff serve Hobsons Town Crier, Sharps Doom Bar and Wye Valley Butty Bach and HPA on handpump; background music and a big-screen TV for sports events. The generously served home-cooked food is very popular, so it's best to book. Wheelchair access through the front door to the top dining area; bar access through a side passage and door into their glass-roofed courtyard. No disabled loos.

The good pub guide food review

Traditional food at fair prices includes sandwiches, baguettes and jacket potatoes, southern fried chicken dippers with barbecue sauce, chilli and cheese tortillas, steak and ale pie, burger (beef, Cajun chicken or portobello mushroom) and chips, sweet potato, red pepper and spinach lasagne, salmon, smoked haddock and prawn pie topped with cheesy mash, a range of steaks with mushroom and stilton or peppercorn sauce, and puddings.
