The good pub guide review
With some parts dating from the 1540s, this capacious, cream-painted inn offers lots of inviting nooks and crannies within its rambling yet intimate-feeling interior. The attractive, understated décor brings together antique cushioned dining chairs around dark wood tables, rugs on wood (some old, some new oak) and stone floors, prints hung frame-to-frame on cream walls, bookshelves and open fires. Friendly, efficient staff dispense Phoenix Brunning & Price Original from handpump, alongside farm cider and guests from breweries that might include Moorhouses, Plassey, Salopian and Timothy Taylors, plus fine ranges of gins and whiskies and 20 wines by the glass from an extensive list; board games and background music. Outside there are good solid wood tables and picnic-sets in a pretty, well tended garden.
The good pub guide food review
Reliably good food includes sandwiches, chicken liver pâté with carrot and apricot baked camembert with candied walnuts and ciabatta croutons, vegetable parcels with chilli mango chutney, fried chicken breast with thyme fondant potato, sweetcorn purée and sherry sauce, rump steak sandwich with tarragon mayonnaise and fries, smoked haddock and salmon fishcakes, and puddings such as baked rhubarb cheesecake with stem ginger ice-cream, hot waffle with glazed bananas and honeycomb ice-cream and crème brûlée with shortbread.
