The good pub guide review

This is a lovely place on the Isle of Purbeck and perfect for refreshment ' ginger beer or proper beer available ' after making like the Famous Five and looking for treasure in nearby Corfe Castle (National Trust). The views from the well tended garden with its summer seating and kitchen are quite magnificent. The bar areas and dining room are on several levels with stripped stone and brickwork, flagstones and bare boards, beams and high rafters and open fires; seats range from sofas and easy chairs through all manner of wooden chairs around tables of varying sizes. Stairs lead up from the bar to a small minstrels' gallery-like area with sofas facing one another across a table. There's DBC Jurassic and Origin, and a guest such as Hop Back Crop Circle or Waylands Sixpenny 6d Best Bitter, on handpump, 11 wines by the glass and local cider; background music and board games. The four bedrooms named after local landmarks have splendid views and are delightfully appointed.

The good pub guide food review

As well as the Jerkshak from Easter to September (the landlady is from Jamaica) for jerk chicken, curry mutton, ackee and saltfish and other Caribbean dishes, the varied food includes sandwiches, smoked mackerel pâté, calamari, grilled goats cheese salad with roasted aubergine, courgette and peppers, sharing boards, local sausages with mash and gravy, ham, egg and chips, free-range chicken with creamy wild mushroom sauce and dauphinoise potatoes, and puddings such as chocolate torte and Purbeck ice-creams.
