The good pub guide review
You'll get a warm welcome from the convivial licensee at this pretty little 17th-c inn tucked away in a lovely village by the upper Thames. The small, traditional, beamed front bar has ancient flagstones and stripped-stone walls along with a woodburning stove, seats against the counter and a village pub atmosphere. There are two Hook Norton beers (one named for the pub and a guest) on handpump, good wines by the glass and maybe farm cider. The dining room has elegant wooden or painted dining chairs around all sorts of tables, striped and cushioned wall seats, paintings on exposed stone walls, and rugs on the floor. Outside in the cottagey garden are seats and tables under parasols. The seven attractive bedrooms are light, comfortable and breakfasts good. The Oxfordshire Cycleway runs close by and the inn is a short walk from William Morris's former home, Kelmscott Manor (open Wednesdays and Saturdays April-October). This is sister pub to the Five Alls at Filkins (also in Oxfordshire) and Bull in Fairford (Gloucestershire).
The good pub guide food review
Enjoyable food includes sandwiches, twice-baked double gloucester soufflé, quail eggs with celery salt, truffle mac 'n' cheese, sweet potato and squash curry, pork schnitzel with new potatoes, green beans and tenderstem broccoli, sea bream with seasonal vegetables, new potatoes and sauce vierge, linguine with chilli, oregano, olive oil and parmesan, cold poached salmon with garden herbs, new potato salad and herb mayo, flat-iron steak with tomatoes, peppercorn sauce and chips, and puddings such as summer berries eton mess, and raisin and pear crumble with custard.
