The good pub guide review

There are lovely walks around the Bourne Rivulet, a chalk tributary of the River Test that runs through the garden of this popular pub. Dogs and their walkers are warmly welcomed, including in the bedrooms. The bar areas have sofas, wooden dining chairs and tables on coir or bare boards, empty wine bottles lining shelves and windowsills, and a warm log fire. Ringwood Razorback, Ramsbury Gold and changing guests on handpump and 17 of wines by the glass (including fizz) served by helpful, friendly staff; background music, board games and TV. There's also a deli counter for coffee and cake, afternoon tea and picnic hampers ' popular with the fishing fraternity, for those hours spent on the riverbank. A large barn extension, with rafters, beams, rustic partitioning and movable shelves made from crates, has big tables surrounded by leather, cushioned and upholstered chairs, more coir carpeting, another open fire and doors that lead out to a terrace with picnic-sets and other seating. The nine bedrooms are modern and comfortable.

The good pub guide food review

The contemporary food uses local seasonal produce; game, including their very popular venison burger, features heavily in autumn. Other dishes include heritage tomatoes with mozzarella and basil vinaigrette, Scottish smoked salmon with watercress and shaved fennel, British brisket burger with ruby slaw and fries, seared bream fillet with Cornish new potatoes niçoise, chicken, tarragon and leek pie with mash and buttered greens, roast cauliflower with Persian-spiced lentils, spinach, chickpeas and flatbread, and puddings such as dark chocolate brownie and rhubarb and custard crumble pie.
