The good pub guide review

A seafaring theme dominates the décor at this jolly inn, where local salty seadogs congregate with holidaymakers from the glittering marina right next door. There are photographs of smart yachts and views of the western Solent, and sailing paraphernalia including model boats and ship's instruments displayed with pride. There's also much evidence of the historic vessel from which the pub takes its name, which weighed anchor in nearby Southampton in 1620 before the gruelling sea crossing ahead. The high-ceilinged front rooms have built-in wall seats and leather-seated dining chairs around dark wooden tables, candles and fresh flowers, patterned wallpaper or turquoise paintwork and logs piled neatly into the fireplace. Brakspear Gravity, Ringwood Razorback and frequently changing guests (Flack Manor is a favourite) on handpump and several wines by the glass, served by efficient young staff. Two rooms at the back have similar seats and tables, bookshelves and a raised woodburning stove; background music and TV. There's a covered terrace and steps down to a lawn with heavy rustic tables and benches. The ocean-wave theme continues in the six airy, stylish bedrooms, some of which have coastal views.

The good pub guide food review

The pleasing food is seasonal and strong on fish and seafood, including a highly prized fish pie. Other dishes include crispy bacon, gem and avocado salad, seared bream fillet with Cornish new potatoes niçoise, chicken, tarragon and leek pie with mash and buttered greens, pan-fried 8oz rump steak with field mushroom, tomatoes, watercress and garlic and parsley butter, Moving Mountain vegan burger with vegan cheese, guacamole and fries, roast cauliflower with Persian-spiced lentils, spinach, chickpeas and flatbread, and puddings such as lemon tart crème fraîche or sticky toffee pudding.
