It’s Christmas! Well… almost. And, for most of us that means detangling the fairy lights and draping whatever’s left of last year’s tinsel onto the tree. That’s about as far as we’ll go when it comes to decorating our homes or work spaces during the festive period but not for these classic pubs. We’ve got a list of six pubs that really get into the Christmas spirit, adding an extra splash of festive cheer and celebrating the season in style.
On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me… a pub covered in a lot of trees. The Churchill Arms in Kensington has made a name for itself over the past 32 years being given the unofficial title of ‘Britain’s Most Festive Pub’. Prior to his retirement, previous owner Gerry O’Brien adorned the pub with over 90 Christmas trees and 21,000 lights creating a spectacular light show for all to see and accompanied by mulled wine and festivities. I suppose Christmas only comes around once a year, so it is always best to make the most of it. This year then, why not head down to The Churchill Arms for a truly unforgettable Christmas party. They’ve got all the things that make this time of year special; from delicious festive foods to all your favourite drinks, all set in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Thinking of welcoming, children and dogs are welcome at this pub. There is even a dedicated children’s area (so that you can enjoy your Christmas beer in peace).
Feeling peckish? Snacks and sandwiches are available at the Arms or if you’re thinking about truly spicing up your Christmas, The Churchill Arms hosts a Thai restaurant situated within a beautiful butterfly themed conservatory. See, you didn’t need to book that flight abroad after all! You’ve got it right here on your doorstep.
Shibden Mill Inn is taking Christmas to a whole other level this year. Make Christmas shopping fun by browsing Shibden Mill Inn’s very own Christmas Market! Expect Christmas stalls situated in the gardens, Christmas lights and carols, sandwiches and hot turkey that you can wash down with a glass of mulled wine. Not your scene? Why not book a table at their beautifully presented Winter Wonderland afternoon tea party or make the most of the glorious Shibden Valley by booking on to their two hour guided Twixmas Walk. All proceedings go to the Shibden Valley society.
Next up is The Plough. Based in Bolnhurst, The Plough is the perfect trinity of atmosphere, service and sumptuous food. Its original features that date back to Tudor times, candle light and open fires create a warm festive feeling, whilst the subtle lighting adds to the intimacy of the season. But The Plough is bringing much more to the plate this Christmas. If you’re looking for something new and interesting to do over the Christmas period, you might want to head down to their Christmas Wreath-Making Workshop on 13th December. This pub is pet and child-friendly, so you can bring the dog and get the kids to show off their creative skills. The course includes tea and coffee; and a light lunch too. The workshop is hosted by local artisan florists Kim and Daniel Chappie.
Can’t make the Christmas Wreath-Making Workshop? No worries, why not book a table for The Plough’s candlelit Christmas Eve supper? And, if you’re in the spirit of giving, The Plough is adding a discretionary £1 donation to every table bill in support of StreetSmart – A charity for the homeless. Not your kind of charity? Delicious cakes are also on sale in support of CHUMS – A children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing service.
The Snowdrop Inn in Lewes is a brilliant choice this Christmas. If you’re into history, this pub was named to commemorate the Lewes Avalanche of 1836 – one of the worst natural disasters in British history. Christmas is all about togetherness and The Snowdrop Inn knows all about this. It is family-friendly, welcomes dogs and boasts two outdoor garden areas (just in case the British weather decides to give us some sun during the winter months). Jazz nights run every other Monday and live music happens most Saturdays. Their Christmas menu consists of mulled wine and ginger cordial and they have an extensive range of beers. Food-wise, all meat is free range and there are alternative vegetarian choices if meat isn’t your thing.
Perfectly named for Christmas is The Holly Bush. Based in the heart of historic Hampstead sits this centuries old pub loved by all the locals. Step inside and you’ll discover cosy corners where you can sit and drink wines, ales and enjoy scrumptious food. This Christmas, let The Holly Bush take care of your private function, work Christmas drinks or any other Christmas needs with their dedicated Christmas Coordinator. The ingredients for their Christmas menu have been carefully selected from the best suppliers in the country and are cooked to perfection by expert Fuller’s Kitchen chefs. Take for example, their famous Christmas pudding – originally inspired by a nineteenth century recipe but with a Holly Bush twist. This year, they’ve added fruit soaked in their very own Fuller’s black cab stout, for even more richness and flavour.
Want something to celebrate this Christmas? Offering 20% off of food when you book your Christmas party on the 3rd, 4th, 10th and 11th of December is The Star Tavern. Now that is something to spread Christmas cheer about! Recognised as one of the best pubs, The Star Tavern is an award winning pub based in London. Emphasis is placed on great service, good beers and home-cooked food. They also come in handy if you’re planning on hosting any private functions near Knightsbridge. Their private dining room can host up to 50 guests standing or 34 when seated and can be used for parties, conferences, presentations and small wedding receptions – perfect for those planning a winter wedding.
