Good Pub Guide Recommended
Just a few minutes from the motorway but nevertheless feeling nicely tucked away, this creamy yellow dining pub makes a very handy break from the M11. With the friendly landlord much in evidence and its cheery warm service, it's a reliable place for a good meal. It's worth booking ahead or arriving early as it is popular with an older set at lunchtime and a more varied crowd in the evening. The spacious carpeted main bar has a cricket theme, with lots of cricketing prints, photographs, cartoons and other memorabilia, and Greene King Abbot and IPA and a guest on handpump and decent house wines. There's a well furnished small lounge bar. Though children are not welcome inside, there is plenty for them outside including a sturdy climbing frame, swings and a basketball hoop. There are picnic-sets out on a terrace (with heaters) and on the lawn behind (you can hear the motorway and Stansted Airport out here).
Good Pub Guide Food
Besides a wide range of generously served pubby standards such as sandwiches, filled baked potatoes and ploughman's (lunchtime only), steak and ale pie, steaks and vegetable curry, they serve quite a lot of fresh fish dishes - maybe cod, tuna steak, crab salad and lemon sole. They don't offer starters.
