Good Pub Guide Recommended
An enjoyable all-rounder, this popular stone hotel still manages to convey a relaxed unhurried atmosphere. The nicely restored carpeted bar has a woodburning stove with a traditional oak surround, low beams, comfortable seats including some comfy deep leather sofas and easy chairs, and old [I]Punch[I] country life cartoons on the terracotta walls above its dark dado. Four good changing local ales such as Black Sheep Best, Durham Magus and a couple of guests from brewers such as Hadrian & Border and Wylam are on handpumps on the heavily carved dark oak bar counter. This leads through to the restaurant and spacious conservatory; good coffee, cheerful service, piped music and TV. There are tables on a terrace in the walled garden. Disabled access to some of the ground- floor bedrooms and theyare licensed to hold civil marriages.
